How to Choose the Right Bird Cage Size for Your Pet

How to Choose the Right Bird Cage Size for Your Pet

Why Bird Cage Size Matters

Choosing the right bird cage size is one of the most important decisions you'll make as a bird owner. A cage that's too small can cause stress, feather plucking, and health problems, while the right size gives your bird room to stretch, climb, and thrive.

At YES4PETS, we stock a wide range of bird cages and aviaries to suit every species — from small budgies to large parrots. Here's everything you need to know before you buy.

General Rule: Bigger Is Always Better

As a starting point, your bird should be able to fully extend both wings without touching the sides of the cage. They should also be able to move between at least two or three perches comfortably. If in doubt, always size up.

Cage Size by Bird Species

Small Birds (Budgies, Canaries, Finches)

Minimum cage size: 45cm W × 45cm D × 60cm H. These birds are active flyers, so a longer cage (wider than it is tall) is ideal to allow horizontal flight.

Medium Birds (Cockatiels, Conures, Lovebirds)

Minimum cage size: 60cm W × 60cm D × 90cm H. Cockatiels in particular love to climb, so vertical height is important.

Large Birds (African Greys, Amazons, Eclectus)

Minimum cage size: 90cm W × 60cm D × 120cm H. These intelligent birds need space for enrichment toys and multiple perches.

Extra-Large Birds (Macaws, Cockatoos, Large Parrots)

Minimum cage size: 120cm W × 90cm D × 150cm H or larger. For these birds, a full aviary setup is often the best option.

Bar Spacing: Don't Overlook This

Bar spacing is just as important as overall cage size. If bars are too wide, small birds can escape or get their heads stuck. If too narrow, larger birds can't grip properly.

  • Small birds (budgies, finches): 1–1.5cm bar spacing
  • Medium birds (cockatiels, conures): 1.5–2cm bar spacing
  • Large birds (parrots, cockatoos): 2–3cm bar spacing

Indoor Cage vs. Outdoor Aviary

If you have multiple birds or a large parrot, an outdoor aviary may be a better long-term solution. Aviaries allow birds to experience natural light, fresh air, and much more space to fly freely.

Our Bird Cages collection includes everything from compact indoor cages to full-size aviaries with castor wheels for easy repositioning.

Our Top Pick: YES4PETS XXXL 185cm Bird Cage

For medium to large parrots, our best-selling YES4PETS XXXL 185cm Bird Cage Pet Parrot Aviary is a standout choice. It features:

  • 185cm height — plenty of vertical space for climbing
  • Removable divider — perfect for introducing a new bird or separating birds when needed
  • Castor wheels — move it around your home with ease
  • Multiple perches included
  • Easy-clean removable tray

It's also available with a matching cage cover to help your bird settle at night.

Other Things to Consider

  • Cage shape: Rectangular cages are best — round cages can disorient birds and reduce usable space.
  • Placement: Position the cage at eye level, away from drafts, direct sunlight, and kitchen fumes.
  • Accessories: Leave room inside for perches, food/water bowls, and enrichment toys without overcrowding.
